An Introduction to V-Day and The Vagina Monologues

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop worldwide violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.
Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of "The Vagina Monologues" to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities.
The V-Day movement is growing at a rapid pace throughout the world, in 76 countries to date. V-Day, a non-profit corporation, distributes funds to grassroots, national and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls.
The 'V' in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina.

Southampton Women’s Aid

Southampton Women's Aid was established as a registered charity in 1974 and currently runs three refuges in the city. We are affiliated to Women's Aid Federation England (WAFE), which is a national organisation, helping to link together and co-ordinate the work of individual refuges and to campaign on behalf of women and their children experiencing domestic violence.
Southampton Women's Aid provides temporary, emergency accommodation for women and children experiencing physical, emotional, psychological and/or sexual abuse. The refuge provides a safe and supportive environment for women at a time of crisis. Workers offer advice and support in a non-directive, non-judgemental way, so women are able to make their own choices. The workers also offer help and support to women in their dealings with all relevant agencies.
Women can also phone the advice line (023) 80710068 for advice and support during office hours. Outreach support is offered to women experiencing domestic violence not living in the refuges so that women can explore their options in a safe, supportive and listening environment. Southampton Women's Aid also runs a weekly support group for women with play facilities for children. In addition to this we offer a children’s' outreach service so that children and young people can have a safe space of their own to explore their feelings around domestic violence.

V-Day Southampton 2005 came about after I read the book The Vagina Monologues.
I realised, that this was a way in which I could help in a movement I feel strongly about, whilst having fun and gaining new experiences.
The dedication and effort put in by the cast, crew and our host, have made the experience one not to forget. I hope you enjoy the show. Briony
